Today is all about beats and counting. Whip up a storm with the rainstick and thunderbox and let’s all head down to the rainforest, where we will jump and croak like treefrogs and catch flies on our ‘tongues’. Then we will form a regiment of army ants, marching and drumming our way round the room. We will then try some bird sounds using occarinas.
Of course there will be plenty of time for singing, dancing, and jamming with the instrument box.

Music Adventures is a new fun and inclusive music group for 2-4 year olds. The children will learn about creating and appreciating music through pretend play and movement, and every session will include an introduction to a new instrument (whereever hygenic and safe the children will be allowed to handle and play the main instrument). There will be dancing, plenty of time to play a wide range of real instruments and a trip on the magic carpet to a new theme each session.

Early musical education helps with all areas of life, in particular listening, turn taking, counting, sharing, body awareness, co-ordination, concentration, confidence and self expression. However this is not a classroom situation! We will be being very silly and loud. There will be no wrong answers and the sessions will evolve to suit the character and experience of the children present. Music is a social and joyous thing and this is the main message I wish to pass on.

Payment will be on a session by session basis, not by term, so if your child finds they do not enjoy it or if you would just like to explore their favourite themes there is no pressure or extra cost. I do request advance booking, to control class size.

Children with extra needs are welcomed and the age range is a recommendation, not a rule. This venue is downstairs and we can open the fire doors for wheelchair access. This session will involve drumming and thundery noises, although they shouldn’t be excessively loud. Please let me know when paying if there is anything special which will make it easier for your child to take part.

Climate change talk

Jon Fuller from South East Essex Friends of the Earth spoke at the Chapel on Thursday 9 November. We’ll be posting some links to topics raised in his talk shortly.

Is it really “game over” for humanity?
Has the runaway greenhouse effect begun?
Do we still have time to avoid climate change catastrophe?

As media outlets report on evidence that a series of ‘climate feedbacks’ have begun to emerge and scientists like Prof Stephen Hawking express grave concern for life on Earth, we invite you to a talk to hear what scientists mean when they warn of the runaway greenhouse effect. The talk runs for 30 minutes and will be followed by a discussion open to all.

The talk will explain what lies behind the headlines, such as the expression “game over” in the Independent, the threat of “extinction of our species” on the RT TV channel and Prof Stephen Hawking’s warning that the planet will soon be unable to support life.
The talk is delivered in an easily accessible way for those unfamiliar with the science relating to climate change. The main ‘climate feedbacks’ will be explained and why scientists are now so concerned. As some scientists call for a technology called ‘geoengineering’, to lower global temperatures, the talk will explain what is being proposed.

People under the age of 25 may ask whether they can survive what could be coming. So for young adults the talk will also set out what might be done to feed people if global agriculture suffers unprecedented disruption.

All Souls Day Open Church and Remembrance Service

Our Chapel is open all day on Thursday 2 November to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Please come to the chapel and light a candle, bring a photo or write a message to hang on our streamers. There will be refreshments and all donations will go to Fair Havens Hospice.

Then at 7pm we will be having a short and very beautiful, candlelit service to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. The wonderful Waterside Choir will be singing some award-winning arrangements of songs such as You Raise Me Up and Lean on Me. Everyone is welcome to join us: all faiths or no faith. Children are very welcome too. Refreshments will be available for the service as well, and once again all donations will go to Fair Havens Hospice.

We hope you can join us for this special day.

Leigh Folk Festival 2017

Housekeeping notices: Access to the upstairs stage in the main Chapel is up a set of (widely-spaced) steps. The Community room is at street level. Leigh Art Trail 2017

Fishermen’s Chapel was one of the venues for the Leigh Art Trail this year.

The artists featured on the Fishermen’s Chapel Community Art Wall:

Trevor Morgan is an amateur photographer, who has lived in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex for over 50 years, and has always had an interest in photography dating back to the Box Brownie and the Kodak Instamatic.

Inspiration for his pictures comes from many sources, but primarily nature. Trevor also takes inspiration from the texture and form within landscapes and seascapes.

He uses a Canon E0S 600D DSLR with 18-135mm, 50-250mm and 100mm macro lenses. View more at morganpics.blogspot.com

James Jaggard is a painter who was born in Colchester and grew up in Leigh-on-Sea. He takes inspiration from landscapes and latterly cityscapes, adding texture to his oil paintings using found objects; flotsam and jetsam. Niamh Smith – A new young artist, just 17 years old, specialising in free hand mandala art on print based materials and found objects, particularly driftwood from our local Estuary beaches. Sally-Anne Ashley‘s work is an intuitive response to her inner landscape; including personal thoughts and feelings in relationships through to her love of nature, figures, symbols and often made-up creatures feature. These ideas are explored in a variety of mediums, mostly paints and textiles. Layer upon layer of paint is applied to suggest transient moments and emphasise the impermanence of everything we know. Everything changes from one moment to the next – parts are covered and overlayed but not forgotten – it’s from these layers that stories are made. Instagram: @sallyanneashley

Event info:

We’ll be open from 10 until 4pm from 10-17 June, providing refreshments every day, (except Sunday, 11 June, when another event takes place in our Community Room). We have art on display in our downstairs Community Room, why not come in and relax as you make your way around the Art Trail?

The full programme for the Art Trail is here, but please note that the Chapel events are as listed below, not as per the programme!

Special events:

Saturday 10 June: There will be an open day to kick off the art trail on Sat, 10th June – a chance to come and view our new Community Art Wall, and also to talk to some of the people who currently use the Chapel space. There will also be poetry from Billericay comic poet Simon Blackman who has just written his debut collection of ‘greatest hits’, available to purchase and get signed on the day. Artist Sally-Anne Ashley will also be on hand in the morning to talk about her art and the journey it took her on.

Sunday 11 June, 7.30pm: Service with our Gospel Choir. Doors open from 7.

Tuesday 13 June, 6-8.30pm There will be a late night viewing, with refreshments from pop up cafe Beep Beep Pop.
7-9pm. Gospel Choir rehearsing at the Chapel, along with Cockleshell Chorus. Come and join our rehearsal!

Wednesday 14 June: From 10am ’til 12pm, there will be a special family coffee morning with an Under 5’s messy play. All materials provided, just bring painting clothes! The space will then continue to be open for viewings that day as usual but from 12-4pm, following the messy play.

The Daisy Bowlers at Hadleigh Temple

The Daisy Bowlers are performed at the Salvation Army Hadleigh Temple on 20 May, along with Young Musicians of the Salvation Army. £1000 was raised for the Fishermen’s Chapel fund. Huge thanks to everyone who came, and the Salvation Army Hadleigh Temple.
